For some weird reason last night this story popped into my brain as I tried to go to sleep. I cannot place it - I’m not sure if I read it somewhere, heard it, or imagined it up on the spot. It seems reminiscent of a child’s book - like Goodnight Moon - or something. So, I share it with you in all of its randomness and ask: Have you heard anything like this anywhere?
LAMP
In the cool of the night
in the darkness of the room
the cold lamp began to sense
First it was the glow of a nightlight,
then the darting of light reflected
in the eyes of the creatures
just outside the window
The lamp then saw the pin points
of lights in the city sky scape
and the blinking lights in the dark sky
Attention now fixed upward the
lamp saw the twinkling of the
stars across the dark expanse
And then, the grandness of the
light of the moon.
The lamp, now absorbed
in all of this fantastic light desired
greatly to shine the beam
of his own light
and join this harmony of light in the dark.
So the lamp looked to the nightlight and asked,
“please share your light”
But the nightlight could not
To the animals outside, the lamp now turned,
“please share your light with me”
“Our light is merely a reflection
of the light surrounding us
we cannot give that to you.”
Ah, perhaps the city sky scape
has light enough to share with the lamp,
but alas it was too small in the distance
Further away yet, the stars and
moon shone brightest
but their light came from the sun which
was even then too far away to benefit the lamp.
Almost in despair the lamp then
turned his attention to his own
cold, dark shape and saw it,
A cord and an outlet
“Ah, yes, my source of light of course!”
Plugging in his cord to the outlet
the lamp waited expectantly
No light.
sorrow,
grief,
despair
the lamp hung his head.
Then, quietly rising in the dark
a form came and
touched the lamp.
With that warm, gentle stroke
the lamp now beamed with
light!
Light that now joined all of the
night’s light at play
Glory, joy, celebration!
As Christians, we often look
all around us for sources of light
to share with us.
Trying to be a nightlight when we’re a lamp
Wishing we could be the light reflected in another’s eyes
Focusing our attention on the dazzling light of others far away
in grand, exciting places
Dazing off far in the distance forgetting the
closeness required to radiate the light of the Son.
It is only when we look
to our power source, the one made into us,
in the image of God
and
connect with Him that
we have potential for beaming light
And even then, we only shine
bright when God touches our lives
and reveals His light from within.
